Baltimore’s Urban Deindustrialization & Health

Almost 10 months ago, Baltimore City, in a state of emergency, was besieged by local police forces and the National Guard to control rioters and protesters angered by the death of 25 year old Freddie Gray and the deeper issue of institutionalized racism. While the story has nearly disappeared from public eye, the issues that face inner-city Baltimoreans have not.
Some argue the civil unrest was related to the deindustrialization of American cities, either due to the outsourcing of jobs or advances in technology, which ultimately led to fewer workers needed. Currently, Baltimore City has an unemployment rate of 7.0% as of last December. For black men aged 20 to 24 living in Baltimore City, the unemployment rate is much higher and was cited at 37% in 2013.
